Maars to calderas: end-members on a spectrum of explosive volcanic depressions

چکیده
We discuss maar-diatremes and calderas as end-members on a spectrum of negative volcanic landforms (depressions) produced by explosive eruptions (note—we focus on calderas formed during explosive eruptions, recognizing that some caldera types are not related to such activity). The former are dominated by ejection of material during numerous discrete phreatomagmatic explosions, brecciation, and subsidence of diatreme fill, while the latter are dominated by subsidence over a partly evacuatedmagma chamber during sustained, magmatic volatile-driven discharge. Many examples share characteristics of both, including landforms that are identified as maars but preserve deposits from non-phreatomagmatic explosive activity, and ambiguous structures that appear to be coalesced maars but that also produced sustained explosive eruptions with likely magma reservoir subsidence. A convergence of research directions on issues related to magma-water interaction and shallow reservoir mechanics is an important avenue toward developing a unified picture of the maar-diatreme-caldera spectrum.

Corrigendum: Maars to calderas: end-members on a spectrum of explosive volcanic depressions
Reason for Corrigendum: In the original article (Palladino et al., 2015), there was an error in Figure 1. The vertical axis of the qualitative plot reported erroneously “ratio of juvenile to lithic materials in deposits outside of depression”. The correct wording is as follows: “ratio of juvenile to total (i.e., juvenile+lithic) materials in deposits outside of depression”. In fact, as it was r...

Recent seafloor exploration has shown that volcanic-hosted massive sulfides (VHMS) occur in modern silicic calderas formed by highly explosive eruptions at substantial water depths. Sampling of these has so far been restricted to surficial deposits. Ancient analogs provide a time-integrated view of the structure and fill of deepwater calderas, but constraints on paleo-water depths have previous...

Maars are monogenic volcanic edifices of peculiar morphology with a wide circular crater surrounded by a low gentle rim of erupted pyroclastic material. Craters of maars are deeply incised into underlying rocks (frequently down to the aquifer), which explains their frequent partial or complete water infill. Owing to their morphological peculiarities, maars are easily identifiable in air photos.

Earth's largest calderas form as the ground collapses during immense volcanic eruptions, when hundreds to thousands of cubic kilometres of magma are explosively withdrawn from the Earth's crust over a period of days to weeks. Continuing long after such great eruptions, the resulting calderas often exhibit pronounced unrest, with frequent earthquakes, alternating uplift and subsidence of the gro...
متن کاملHow caldera collapse shapes the shallow emplacement and transfer of magma in active volcanoes
Calderas are topographic depressions formed by the collapse of a partly drained magma reservoir. At volcanic edifices with calderas, eruptive fissures can circumscribe the outer caldera rim, be oriented radially and/or align with the regional tectonic stress field. Constraining the mechanisms that govern this spatial arrangement is fundamental to understand the dynamics of shallow magma storage...
